Precautions to Be Aware Of When Taking Melatonin Supplements

Due to potential melatonin side effects and possible interactions with medications, people are advised to take dietary supplements such as melatonin for sleep supplements under the supervision of a professional healthcare provider. For some individuals, they might experience vivid dreams or nightmares once they use melatonin. Excessive intake may even disrupt the body’s circadian rhythms. Melatonin may result to drowsiness if this is taken during daytime. If the person becomes drowsy the morning after the intake of melatonin, it would be best to take it at a lower melatonin dosage. Meanwhile, nursing and expectant mothers should not use melatonin as this might interfere with fertility. There are several studies which indicate that the use of melatonin supplements could actually worsen the symptoms of depression which is why individuals suffering from depression must seek consult with their doctors before the use of melatonin. Even if a lot of researchers believe that the levels of melatonin go down with age, there has been newer evidence which has brought this theory into question. Those who are more than 65 years of age have to talk with their doctors before using melatonin so that the levels of this hormone can be monitored.
