What You Should Know About The Hormone Melatonin?

Melatonin is a natural hormone which can be helpful in regulating sleep. This also has a bit influence on other hormones produced by the body. Melatonin for sleep supplements are growing in popularity as they are advertised as effective sleep aids. The amount of melatonin the human body produces will be determined by the amount of darkness or light present in the surroundings. The human eyes consist of specialized light-sensitive receptors which will relay the message to a set of nerves inside the brain termed as the suprachiasmatic nucleus or SCN. It is actually the SCN that sets our internal biological clock known as the circadian rhythm. In turn, this will regulate the different kinds of body functions including sleep. Early reports have stated that an individual’s levels of melatonin peaked at the age of 20 and will slowly decrease by 20% at the age of 80. This provides the explanation as to why older people find it difficult to sleep. Most recent evidence, however, suggests that the levels of melatonin do not decline with age. Given the appropriate melatonin dosage, the melatonin supplements can be effective in treating a lot of sleep disorders.  When used on a short-term basis, these are considered to be safe without having to suffer from melatonin side effects.
