Melatonin is a hormone which can be found naturally in the pineal gland of the brain. This is affected by light. If there is absence of light, the pineal gland will secrete natural melatonin which can make a person sleepy.
The use of melatonin can make several people be sleepy. Studies have shown that melatonin is not only helpful in putting a person sleep but it was also discovered in laboratory studies utilizing mice and rats that it is an antioxidant and can help slow down the process of aging. Yet, we are not fully aware of the long-term consequences of the use of melatonin.
The issue with the use of melatonin is that this is not regulated by Food and Drug Administration since this is recognized as a food supplement and not a medication. By law, manufacturers are only obliged to include the distribution address on the container and not the ingredients or how melatonin was produced.
A good number of sleeping medications are designed to be used for a short period of time, usually within two weeks to two months. When consumed for a longer period of time, the effectiveness of medicines will wear off. Hence, usually the dosages should be increased in order for the medications to work.
If the sleeping medications are prescribed for extensive periods of time, then possibly a medication holiday must be taken. Intake of medication holiday would mean not using a regular medicine for a period of time so that the same small dosage can work when you take it again.
There are several sleeping pills which can result to a drugged effect the morning after you take them. These medications are likely to have longer “half lives” which would mean that they stay in your system for a longer period of time. A few medications consist of shorter half lives and you will not feel the drugged effect in the morning after you have taken the medication.
