How the Levels of Melatonin Can Constantly Change With Age

All throughout our lifetimes, the average levels of melatonin will vary greatly. It is during the first three or four months of our lives that melatonin is first secreted by the pineal gland located in the brain. This will coincide with the time when we begin to sleep during the night. Following a rapid increase which will take place between ages one and three; the melatonin levels will fall back to a plateau which can persist throughout the adult period. However, as people begin to age, the levels of melatonin will start to decline. As we reach the age of 70 years old, the amounts of melatonin in our bodies will only be twenty five percent of what they used to be when we were in our younger years. This is thought to be due to some changes related to calcification of the pineal gland. As a result, it will lose its ability to secrete melatonin. Based on speculations, melatonin supplements can be helpful in counteracting the ill effects which come with aging. Even if melatonin is certainly not the fountain of youth, the melatonin supplements can improve sleep efficiency in insomniacs which is typically related to age. Hence, with the proper melatonin dosage and not thinking about deleterious melatonin side effects, these will really make you feel pretty more youthful.
