Melatonin For Vivid Dreams

Melatonin users often report that melatonin causes vivid dreams. The list of melatonin side effects include having vivid dreams or vivid nightmares. Generally, all sleep aids are known to produce vivid dreams. It is thought that the drug is modifying the sleep cycle so that the person is able to emerge from REM sleep (dreams are most vivid during REM) to waking up quickly, this makes the user subjectively report the drug as producing vivid dreams. Some researchers associate vivid dreams with the better sleep quality that you can get from taking melatonin supplements. A higher quality of sleep leads to more vivid dreams.

Some theories about melatonin and vivid dreams are listed below:

1. Melatonin might be an oneirogenic or dream-inducing substance. There are sources on the internet which says that melatonin breaks down into 5-Methoxy-Dimethyltryptamine. This could be responsible for the high intensity visual stimulation.

2. Melatonin might be stimulating REM sleep

User Reports of Melatonin and Vivid Dreams

“Last night, I took a melatonin supplement before bedtime. I haven’t really had much experience with it, so I gave it a try to see what would happen. My dreams were intensely vivid. There was this one dream, where I was in a complete and real reality, yet I remember telling myself, this is just a really real “

“Melatonin can enhance dream recall. I have a friend that says it does. It is mainly a sleep aid and is a natural hormone produced by our body when no light hits our eyes (at night when we are attempting to sleep)”

“I have chronic insomnia and have decided to try the natural medication route. I have been taking 3 mg melatonin for 4 or 5 days, and I have been having these dreams! They are vivid and bright, and leave me waking up awed! Like a religious experience, almost. I find myself thinking about them for days because I recall them so clearly. It’s pretty amazing. Is this a side effect of the hormone? (Not that I mind!)”

I have been an insomniac since the early 80’s after the birth of my children, and finally through the years, with help from Dr.’s, I have found the prescribed medication that helps me with sleep most of the time. I started taking melatonin, 5mg, recently to cut back on one of the prescribed pills. Since, but not immediately, I have been experiencing very vivid dreams, which most are very concerning and unpleasant. Some dreams consist of planes, while flying in the air and items being tossed out of windows. Some are of death. My most recent dream was that my oldest son had died, and left my youngest son and I devastated! I woke up sobbing, and found myself sitting at the edge of my bed hysterical and frightened. Please, if I can receive any feedback, comments, opinions, testimonials, or any other information, I would greatly appreciate it.

The dreams are very vivid and recurring. The dreams remind of LSD trips from my youth in 69-71, when that sht was good. In one dream, I was conscious it was a dream so I felt the texture on a curtain, because I knew that would verify that it was a dream, but then I felt for the raised seam on the embroidery and there it was. Very strange stuff. Melatonin is a very strange over the counter thing…
