Other Safety Concerns regarding the Use of Melatonin Supplements

Melatonin has an effect on the production of other hormones. Theoretically, this will disrupt with the normal sexual development of the person. Thus, melatonin for sleep supplements should not be used in children unless, of course, if they are properly supervised by a healthcare specialist. It is also for this reason that women who want to conceive or get pregnant or are breastfeeding their young should not use these supplements. In the male counterpart, it has been reported that the melatonin side effects would include reduction of sperm count as well as increase in breast size. Melatonin can even influence the levels of insulin in the blood. In addition, it has an effect on the person’s immune functions; however, no reports yet have stated how this affects people with autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis and many more. With people who are suffering from depression, melatonin supplements though taken at appropriate melatonin dosage can actually worsen their symptoms.  That is basically why supervision of a physician is of utmost importance. Also, those with liver problems should not use them considering that the liver is mainly responsible for the breakdown of melatonin. Bear in mind that melatonin can also have possible interactions with some medications. Caution should always be necessary.
